A bulkhead ceiling refers to the section of the ceiling that is intentionally lowered and enclosed. There are different shapes and sizes of bulkheads that can be custom made to align with your intended design.

Bulkhead ceilings can be decorated or enclosed in different kinds of material, allowing you to add texture, colour, and dimension to an otherwise visually bland space. Using different materials to enclose the bulkhead, like timber slats or joinery, makes the ceiling feature really stand out against the rest of the space, which can turn it into a design accent.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CEILINGS AND BULKHEADS?

  • Conceal unsightly plumbing pipes, electrical wires, duct work, or exhaust fans.
  • Create drop downs for ceiling speaker systems and lighting.
  • Create a finish surface between floor levels and roof structure.
  • There are an endless amount of bulkhead designs. A perimeter bulkhead with light trough and LED strip lights is one of the most popular ceiling designs. The “two step ceiling” and “floating ceiling” are also a type of bulkhead. This style looks as if the ceilings are floating at the top of the roof. Bulkhead ceilings above bars are a popular choice for many upmarket bars. They add a touch of elegance to the area when paired with the right colour down lights

WHAT IS THE INSTALLATION PROCESS OF A CEILINGS AND BULKHEADS?

Ceilings and bulkheads can be installed in a variety of different ways depending on their requirements or the design of the building structure.

The most common way to create a ceiling is simply applying plasterboard to the underside of a floor joist or roof truss joist.

Some buildings may require a services void between the underside of a floor joist and a ceiling finish, this is known as a suspended ceiling that will typically be constructed from lightweight metal sections that are suspended from the floor joists to the required depth of service void with a grid type construction of horizontal metal sections fixed to the suspended structs, these sections will support the plasterboard that is screwed to them from below.
